Many football fans in Ghana may be ignorant about this match due to the lack of historical data which cannot be assessed to the match.
The mention of this great match arouses curiosity to these fans as to whether the match did happen or it was just a myth like the Ghana- India game which ended 100-1 against Ghana. Alot of hearsay surrounds this match and I bring to you vivid analysis of the pre and post activities of the game.
Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr.kwame Nkrumah was the originator of the Black Stars of Ghana and the Republicans which was also known as “Osagyefo Owns Club”.The Republicans served as a backup team for the black stars. The difference between the two was that the Black Stars was the national team and the Republicans was a club. Both were been administered by Dr.Kwame Nkrumah and his Director of sports Dr.Ohene Djan. The late Jones Attuquayefio was a player for both the Republicans and the Black stars.
Real Madrid were invited to play in Ghana by Osagyefo Dr.Kwame Nkrumah but prior to the big match there was a big debate as to which Osagyefo’s team will play the champions of Europe at that time, was it going to be the Black stars of Ghana been the national team or Osagyefo’s Own Club been the Republicans.
The Black stars won the mandate to play Real Madrid because the team was stronger than the Republicans.
On 19 August 1962 at the Accra Sports Stadium, the Black Stars played Spanish giants Real Madrid, who were at the time Spanish champions, former European champions and intercontinental champions. The match ended 3–3 at the Accra Sports stadium.
Ghana’s football legend Rev.Osei Kofi featured in that game and it was his first international match as a player,he came in as a substitute for Adarkwa in the second half. His first touch of the ball was an assist to Acquah which led to a goal which is on record.
Ghana’s goals were scored by Edwards Acquah (2) and Aggrey Fynn (1).
On the side of Real Madrid they had three of their greatest players who featured in the game. Pukas,De-stafano,and Francisco “Paco”Gento.
Madrid’s goal scorer were Puskas who scored a brace(2),and Gento(1).The Black stars been the underdogs held their heads high as they were able to match a world class team which could have been merciless.
Ghana won it first African title the following year.
